EXTREME CONDITIONS GEAR
Design and engineer a wearable that equips an individual to perform in extreme conditions.
Sport is constantly evolving, and as humanity continues to innovate, activities like wing-suiting, dry-sloping and many more require individuals to perform at an elite level through an extreme condition. Athletes like Alex Honnold, Fiona Oakes, and Jimmy Chin all use specifically designed equipment and wearables to get them to the finish line. Whether it's running, climbing or exploring, the need for gear will always be constant. This is ADPT by North Face.
THE GREAT ANTARCTIC ICE MARATHON
26.2 miles, -50º F. The Antarctic Ice Marathon is one of the most extreme runs in the world. Runners traverse through the Ellsworth Mountains in Antarctica hoping to cross the finish line. Recognized by Guinness World Records as the most extreme marathon on Earth, the Antarctic Ice Marathon is a feat every runner aspires to check off their to-do list.
CHALLENGES
BLOOD FLOW
While runners run, their outer extremities freeze up therefore taking blood from vital organs in the body, causing the core temperature to drop.
EXCESS BAGGAGE
During the race, runners need to carry their clothes as they remove items due to warm up and insulation.
SWEAT FREEZE
As the race progresses, sweat begins to seep into clothing, and as runners rest, the sweat freezes, resulting in the insulation of the most extreme temperatures.
Design an apparel product that boosts the performance of marathon runners in Antarctica

Breaking down the layers

Multi-layer construction: allows maximum performance
Cutting the weight: by fitting the jacket into multiple pieces, users can experience lightweight benefits
Top shield that pulls back for versatility & weather protection
Construction: removable shield
Top Shield Construction:
This advanced technology allows athletes to adjust their insulation while running

Designing the Jacket You Want
•3 in 1 Layering: by diminishing the amount each runner has to wear, we can increase their performance by allowing them to run with less weight
•Cutting Edge Technology: By utilizing the most advanced materials and tech such as Primaloft® and Nuflate® the jacket becomes suited for top quality performance
Realigning the Target
•Specific Targets: Antarctic Ice Marathon Runners
•Runners who run in the extreme colds
•Branched to everyday runners and competitors

3 layer
• Most durable + breathable combination
• Used for harsh environments

"Crossing the finish line of the Antarctic Ice Marathon has been my proudest moment so far."
-Fiona Oakes, (world marathon runner)
CMF
THE highest level of performance requires the most innovative level of materials

Picking the perfect colors for the future of running.
COLOR

FERRARI RED: Creates bright contrast and an aggressive mood, essential for highly competitive environments
SAND:Trendy tones allow the jacket to create an innovative aesthetic
LAGOON BLUE: High contrast blue tones evoke a cold aesthetic and an adaptive look with the environment

MATERIAL

Materials like Goretex ®, tech fleece, and Primaloftt® fill give the jacket the ability to perform in any condition

FINISH

Sticking to the North Face’s design language and finish language, the decision to use materials and finishes like Goretex® and waterproof fabrics was a clear choice
Subtle detailing such as branded aglets and waterproof zippers, move the jacket to the next level
